How does an author hook you in from the first sentence?

This week we’re completing our narrative writing.  To help us edit and improve our stories, what can grab the reader’s attention from the start?

An amazing story opening.  For example, “Where’s papa going with that axe?” said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.

I love the opening to this story.  What opening of a book really inspires you and explain why?

  1. I am a venomous vorpent and my sting is as deadly as a black widow spider i have already stung one of the characters . (i hope he’s not your favourite.) the curse has come upon him!

    • Which book title is this Emer? Why not ask Essi what book he’s reading as he was on the blog and I wonder if the netbook crashed…

    Alfie hated going to the dentist.As a result the boyws teeth were almost all yellow.The ones that wernt yellow were brown.They bore the stains of all the goodies that children love but dentists hate.Sweets,fizzy drinks,chocolate.The teeteeh that vwere neither yellow nor brown simpily wernt thair any more.They had fallen out.One had bitten into a toffee and stayed there.Assorted fruit-flavord chews had claimed others.
